What is OpenSubsonic?

OpenSubsonic is an open specification that extends the Subsonic API for self-hosted music servers. It standardizes how clients browse libraries, stream audio, and retrieve metadata — so apps like Atero can work with multiple server implementations through one protocol.

Navidrome is the most widely used OpenSubsonic server among Atero users, but the protocol is implemented by other projects as well.

How Atero works with OpenSubsonic

Add your server in Settings → Music Server Settings and select the OpenSubsonic-compatible option. Enter your server URL and credentials. Atero syncs your music library, streams tracks, and — with Pro on supported servers — downloads music for offline listening.

Feature availability can vary by server implementation. Navidrome supports the full set of Atero music features listed below; other OpenSubsonic servers may differ depending on which API endpoints they expose.

Why use Atero with OpenSubsonic?

Dedicated Subsonic clients focus on music playback alone. Atero connects OpenSubsonic servers alongside Jellyfin, Emby, and Audiobookshelf — so one app covers music, podcasts, audiobooks, and EPUB reading if you run multiple libraries.

For OpenSubsonic-only users, Atero provides Android-first listening with Home discovery, lyrics, offline downloads with Pro, and Android Auto — without locking you out of adding a Jellyfin or Audiobookshelf server later.

Frequently asked questions

What is OpenSubsonic?

OpenSubsonic is an open extension of the Subsonic API for self-hosted music servers. It defines endpoints for browsing libraries, streaming, and metadata that clients like Atero can use.

Which OpenSubsonic servers work with Atero?

Navidrome is the most common OpenSubsonic server Atero users connect. Other OpenSubsonic-compatible implementations may work when they expose the expected API endpoints.

Do offline downloads work with OpenSubsonic servers?

Yes on supported servers such as Navidrome. Offline music downloads require Atero Pro.

Does Atero support Subsonic servers that are not OpenSubsonic?

Atero targets OpenSubsonic-compatible servers. Legacy Subsonic servers without OpenSubsonic support may not expose the endpoints Atero requires.

How is OpenSubsonic different from Jellyfin or Emby in Atero?

OpenSubsonic servers connect through the Subsonic API family. Jellyfin and Emby use their own server APIs. Atero supports all three in one app with separate server entries.
